Spacefleet Academy was a military school in the 26th century.
Bernice Summerfield was sent to the Academy as an orphan. Finding the military life intolerable, she went AWOL at age sixteen and hid in the forest near the Academy. Search parties failed to find her, but shortly afterwards girls from the Academy began visiting her for advice. After nearly a year, she met Cadet Simon Kyle, who became her friend and lover, but when they were caught together, he betrayed her in return for reduced discipline. The Academy decided that Bernice was qualified for frontline service, made her the youngest private in Spacefleet, and put her on a troopship bound for Capella, but she jumped ship in an escape pod.
