The '''Reverend Ernest Matthews''' was the dean of [[Merton College]] who travelled from [[Oxford]] to [[Gabriel Chase]] in [[Perivale]] in [[1883]] to speak with [[Josiah Samuel Smith]] about the latter's "theories" concerning [[evolution]], in which Matthews disbelieved.


Reverend Ernest Matthews travels from Oxford to [[Gabriel Chase]] durin the events of [[Ghost Light]]. He is not a beliver in evoltion but in the creation theory. He constantly argues with [[Seventh Doctor| The Doctor]] calling his theories ridiculous. He also argues with [[Josiah Samuel Smith| Josiah]] owner of the house who unknown to Matthews is an alien. While arguing Josiah gets angry and feeds Ernest bananas by som means these turn him into an ape.

The Reverend Ernest Matthews was the dean of Merton College who travelled from Oxford to Gabriel Chase in Perivale in 1883 to speak with Josiah Samuel Smith about the latter's "theories" concerning evolution, in which Matthews disbelieved.

Matthews quarrelled with the Seventh Doctor, whom he mistook for Smith. As an ironic revenge, Smith turned him into an ape and put him on display. (TV: Ghost Light)
