Mastodons were prehistoric mammals found on Earth, resembling mammoths.
After they had developed hunting, early humans during the Ice Age sometimes cornered Mastodons and speared them to death to feed on their flesh. The Fourth Doctor showed one of his companions such a scene, demonstrating that Man had established himself as a dangerous predator on par with the Dinosaurs early on in his history. (PROSE: The Doctor Who Dinosaur Book)
Mastodons were known to get frozen in glaciers. When Arden originally unearthed Varga the Ice Warrior, he mistook him for a Mastodon. (TV: The Ice Warriors)
