Spindle was a part of the captain's ship that affected the baseplate repetition filament. By adjusting it accordingly, one could restart the ship's engines, enabling it to travel. The Fourteenth Doctor adjusted them when trying to restart the ship, only for the arrival of the Not-things to stop him and Donna Noble's efforts.
