A smoking jacket was a form of jacket forged to wear when tabacco smoking.
The Third Doctor wore a smoking jacket of navy blue velvet with a shawl collar when he first met the Silurians during the Wenley Moor Affair, (TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians) when foiling General George Carrington's plan to frame alien ambassadors to justify war, (TV: The Ambassadors of Death) and when going to a parallel world and stopping Eric Stahlman's Inferno Project from destroying Earth.
