Wenley Moor nuclear research facility was a nuclear power research centre built in the late 20th century at Wenley Moor. The centre was designed to develop a new kind of nuclear reactor that converted nuclear energy into electrical energy to produce a cheap new source of power.

Millions of pounds, according to Edward Masters, had been spent constructing the centre. The centre was built in the existing cave network.

After a series of power drains occurred, UNIT went there to investigate, and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart later summoned the Third Doctor and Liz Shaw for help. The Silurians had caused the power drains. The Silurians operated nearby and had woken up from hibernation after their predicted end of the world event millions of years prior to the incident. The Silurians attempted to infect the people there with a Silurian virus that would end the human race, but a cure was found and later mass produced with the Doctor and Liz' help. They were also responsible for mental breakdowns. They wanted to use the nuclear facility to power a molecular disperser to end the human race, but their plans were thwarted again when the Doctor and Liz overloaded the disperser. The nuclear research facility was shut down after the plague outbreak. (TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians)

After the failure of the Wenley Moor nuclear research facility, among other incidents, was publicised by the journalist James Stevens in his "Bad Science" series of articles in the Daily Chronicle, Harold Wilson's position as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom became untenable and the Labour Party lost the general election in June 1970 to the Conservatives, led by Edward Heath.
