Dr Hammond was an android. He was the doctor for Isolation Station Forty.

He was created by the actuaries and programmed not to be aware of his artificial nature. They were funding Paterson's time travel experiments so Hammond could go back to find out how the war they were fighting had started, since they had forgotten in the ensuing centuries. He was destroyed when his battery exploded. (PROSE: Anachrophobia)
