Macrinus was a robot who wanted to help the Eighth Doctor and Lucie Miller escape the cannibalists. It wanted to find the reset switch to stop the cannibalist. It sacrificed its life in order to make sure that the Doctor and Lucie could get to the reset switch. (AUDIO: The Cannibalists)
