Prior to the premiere of Boom, Sethu was also announced to be joining Season 2 as a new companion, alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.[1] When asked about this and the comparison to Clara Oswald, Steven Moffat replied "I mean, I was talking to Russell about what we’re going to do, but she’s there! We’re just going to do Clara again."[2]
In comments posted on official social media channels, Russell T Davies stated that Sethu would not be reprising the role of Mundy Flynn when she returned to the show, and that things "[were] about to get timey-wimey" with regards to her return. Sethu added that fans would have to "wait and see" how her return manifested in the role of new companion.[3]
In the July 2024 issue of SFX magazine, Davies compared the story of Sethu's casting to how Freema Agyeman had been cast as Martha Jones, stating that he had been impressed by her during the production of Boom and he had wanted to work with her again, so he decided to cast her again as it had been done before. Sethu was not required to audition for her companion role.[4]
