When a Rostrow space mission mistakenly took some of the Verdants prisoner, Phlege believed them to be hostile and led his people in withdrawing underground and using a force field to prevent the Rostrows' ship from leaving. The First Doctor and Duh went to the Verdants' underground caves and found Phlege after escaping some Verdant executioners. Phlege, eventually recognising the Doctor, learned that the Rostrows were unaware that the Verdants they had collected were intelligent beings, and with the misunderstanding resolved, peace was made between the two peoples.
