Crediton Vale was a nuclear bunker and centre of regional government built around 1950 by the British government. The bunker was built into existing caves, and its entrance was disguised as a bungalow on the surface.

When the Cold War ended the facility went out of use, and Crediton Vale became a tourist attraction. The local council then decided to fill in the bunker and build some flats on the surface. However, during this time they discovered that the bunker was built on top of many ancient Roman artefacts. According to the Tenth Doctor, a nearby Roman town fell in the revolt of Boudicca, and the Britons chucked the Romans' possessions into the nearby caves. In 2007, Frank Openshaw and some student volunteers began to excavate the site. Among the artefacts found at the Crediton Vale dig site were a turning spike, Roman coins, a pizza slice, a mosaic, and the casing of a long-dead Dalek. (PROSE: I Am A Dalek)
