Wissfornjarl was a name given to the First Doctor by the spaywife Janet McKay while on the Isle of Hoy, Orkney in 1956. After seeing his arrival in the TARDIS, she mistook him for the island's protector from Norse mythology. He believed that it was simplest to accept the name. The name meant "Wise Old Chieftain" in Norse, which Ian thought was appropriate. (AUDIO: The Revenants)
