- The Doctor is referred to throughout as "Dr Who", and several times he is referred to as a human or an "Earthman".
- The cover and internal illustrations were made by Walter Howarth.
- Natarls from the film Battle in Outer Space (1959) appear on the contents page.
- A PDF of the entire The Dr Who Annual 1966 was included on the DVD for The Web Planet.
- The cover for this first issue was imitated by Julian Nix in the documentary drama An Adventure in Space and Time, with actor David Bradley's likeness in place of William Hartnell. The Zarbi was also replaced with a Dalek and the TARDIS was given a more modern illustrated appearance.
- The feature Who is Dr Who? was included as part of The Doctor Who Audio Annual.
- The feature The Equations of Dr Who and the short story Peril in Mechanistria were included as part of The Second Doctor Who Audio Annual.
