Colonel Alan Mace was the man in charge of the British division of UNIT from 2005, replacing Colonel Brimmicombe-Wood. He was not present at the Tower of London base for The Christmas Invasion, for unknown reasons. In contrast, he took personal command over Operation Blue Sky.

Biography

Upon first meeting the Doctor, he was awe-struck and saluted him, but as the operation went on he became more irritated by the Doctor's cavalier approach and dismissal of the military's tactics. When the Sontarans revealed themselves, he clashed with the Doctor when UNIT tried to launch a nuclear strike on the Sontaran warship, and was later forced by the Doctor to call a full retreat from the ATMOS factory when the Sontarans began slaughtering the soldiers present.

Mace coordinated the UNIT counter offensive to regain the ATMOS factory, having the soldiers rearm themselves with rad-steel coated bullets (preventing the Sontaran's field that negated copper bullets) and calling in the Valiant to clear the gas around the area. When beginning this operation, he finally snapped at the Doctor over his "lack of faith".

He personally killed Sontaran Commander Skorr with a pistol. After the defeat of the Sontaran plan, he shared a kiss with one of his captains, Marion Price. (DW: The Sontaran Stratagem / The Poison Sky)

When Lois Habiba walked in on a discussion between John Frobisher and Colonel Oduya on the 456, they changed the subject to Colonel Mace. In the course of their discussion, it was revealed that he was currently stationed in Vancouver following the 2009 Dalek invasion of Earth. However, if Mace had relocated to Canada then it may assumed that he was no longer in command of the UK division of UNIT (TW: Children of Earth)

Behind the scenes

  • In the exclusive clip for Turn Left, which is set in an alternate timeline slightly before the events of Series 3. Mace is heard talking to Private Harris since Harris is heard talking to Trap One, Mace's codename.
  • His first name of Alan given on Page 129 of REF: The Time Traveller's Almanac.
  • If Mace had relocated to Canada then it may be assumed that he is no longer in command of the UK division of UNIT
