Cyfle traineea are essentially interns. They are accepted on a course of practical study by Cyfle, the training company for the creative industries in Wales. This course usually, but not always, lasts for six months, and allows the participant a chance to work on BBC Wales productions. Cyfle trainees have worked on Doctor Who, Torchwood and several non-Doctor Who universe shows. Generally, the trainees are seconded to the art department, and are therefore nominally under the supervision of production designer Edward Thomas.

On occasion, Cyfle trainees go on to find regular work on Doctor Who after their traineeship concludes. Christina Tom, for instance, was a Cyflie trainee during series 3 of Doctor Who, but graduated to become a full graphic designer in series 4.
