Harry S. Truman was a Missourian who, because he was Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Vice President, became President of the United States when FDR died in office in 1945. He was elected in his own right a few years later, surprising many who believed him to be a "caretaker" figure. In addition to attending the Potsdam Conference to hammer out the details of postwar Europe and authorising the use of nuclear weapons against Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan to end World War II, he also prosecuted the majority of the Korean War and was famous for firing General Douglas MacArthur for insubordination.
