The ugly animal was of a feline-like species. It antagonised John, who quickly scared it off. Later, after John and Gillian had been captured by giant birds, it and the First Doctor were able to rescue them. After this John decided never to be unkind to animals again. (TVC: Kingdom of the Animals)
