As K9 prepared to neutralise the creature, Starkey indicated the eggs and that the creature was a mother. It didn't want to attack or eat anyone, but was just trying to protect her babies. She had to build a pod to transport her eggs, or as K9 and Darius put it an "interstellar baby carriage" or "a spaceship made out of wood and centipede spit" respectively.
