Ian was a companion of the Human scientist Dr. Who and the boyfriend of the Doctor's granddaughter Barbara.
Ian accompanied Dr. Who, Susan and Barbara on his first trip to the planet Skaro in the the TARDIS, where he met the Daleks and then an ancient Roman legion. (Dr. Who and the Daleks) They later traveled to Oldark Moor and met Count Tarkin. (ST: The House on Oldark Moor) Since neither he nor Barbara appeared in Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D., it can be surmised that they left the TARDIS sometime in the interim.
Ian was clumsy and somewhat foolish, leading Susan to have a low opinion of him.
