Unfortunately, Boblipton didn't actually say. If it was the Master, fair enough, he was a "power-crazed nutter trying to take over the universe" as my favourite of the Doctor's companions put it (Survival). --89.241.67.245talk to me 04:20, January 5, 2012 (UTC) | Unfortunately, Boblipton didn't actually say. Anyway, whoever named children on Gallifrey, it's not plausible to suppose they "looked into the future" to do it, unless the Visionary (as seen in The End of Time) -- or someone with the same abilities and function -- was involved. The context gave us no way of telling if "the Visionary" was a straight title like "the Chancellor" or a name like "the Doctor", "the Master", "the Corsair", etc. If Visionary is actually an office, like Chancellor, it's quite possible that the Visionary would be involved in naming children. --89.241.67.245talk to me 05:02, January 5, 2012 (UTC) | Anyway, whoever named children on Gallifrey, it's not plausible to suppose they "looked into the future" to do it, unless the Visionary (as seen in The End of Time) -- or someone with the same abilities and function -- was involved. It must have been over a century before he and the TARDIS "stole" each other but he could quite easily already have been a renegade, albeit a youthful one. Note: Talking to the Doctor, aged 900-odd, in The Doctor's Wife, the TARDIS said he'd been opening the police box doors the wrong way for 700 years. Allowing for the round numbers being slightly inaccurate, that still makes him in the region of 200-odd when he arrived in Shoreditch and the TARDIS took the appearance of a police box. 200-odd minus 90 is over one century but isn't "centuries" (plural). From what little was said, the Doctor and Susan had been travelling together only a relatively short time -- two or three years at most -- before they went to Shoreditch. That's too short a time to make much difference to the calculation. --89.242.73.40talk to me 03:36, January 15, 2012 (UTC) | It must have been over a century before he and the TARDIS "stole" each other but he could quite easily already have been a renegade, albeit a youthful one. on the idea of years in the whoniverse, how do we know what years the doctor is counting by. | on the idea of years in the whoniverse, how do we know what years the doctor is counting by. for example, a year on mars is almost duuble that of a year on earth. the doctor and the tardis could be switching between earth years and gallifreyan years when they refer to time in that manner. or really, the doctor could refer to any year from any planet in the known universe. also, how does a timetraveler keep track of his own age? this is why i think the doctor just makes up his age whenever he says it. also, in mind of evil, the doctor implies he's thousands of years old. with this in mind, it makes all things to do with age and the doctor very complicated. who knows, maybe the madusa cascade was centuries before the doctor became a renegade in earth years but not in galifreyan years. was it ever stated how earth years compare to galifreyan years? As in the discussion of Amy's sonic probe, you appear to be objecting for the sake of objecting, not because you have anything sensible to say. The show is aimed at humans living on Earth. Unless otherwise specified, it's as good as certain "year" means "Earth year". --89.242.73.40talk to me 05:41, January 15, 2012 (UTC) |
