Middle and leg was a batting position in cricket. The Fifth Doctor once asked a bowler named Bill to bowl "middle and leg" to him, to which Bill replied that doing so would mean bowling more towards the Doctor. Indeed, during the exchange the Doctor was clearly seen guarding the middle and leg stumps with his bat. (DWM: The Tides of Time)
