Joy was a student of the archaeologist named Korving in an era after the Cybermen became extinct in the war against Golgoth.
At one time, Korving and Joy were headed to the ruins of Cyber-Control, which was inhabited by the Cult of C'iva. They then questioned the high priest at gunpoint in order to discover what had happened to Golgoth's son and if he could save Mondas and its inhabitants. When Mondas went through a catastrophic earthquake due to its erratic orbit, a piece of rock fell from the ceiling of the Cyber-Control ruins and killed Joy. (COMIC: The Ugly Underneath)
