Uncle Bernard was Andy's uncle and Jack's brother.
Jack initially hated Bernard, but liked him when, after Jack lost his job as a television set salesman, he offered him a mining job on a colony world that paid better. Andy's wife, Susie, and his son, Andy, left with Jack for this planet.
