Richard Wilson OBE (born Iain Carmichael Wilson in Greenock on 9 July 1936[1][2]) played Dr Constantine in the Doctor Who stories The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances.

Career[[edit] | [edit source]]

Wilson is best known for his role as the grumpy Victor Meldrew in the show One Foot in the Grave (in which he co-starred with Annette Crosbie). He also played Gaius in all five series of the BBC fantasy programme Merlin, which debuted in 2008 in the UK and 2009 in the US (with Colin Morgan playing Merlin).

Personal life[[edit] | [edit source]]

Though born in Greenock, Wilson had spent most of his life living in London.[3] Wilson was a noted supporter of gay rights for many years prior.[3] Specifically, he had supported the LGBTQ+ charities, Stonewall and the Terrence Higgins Trust.[4]

Despite claims by The Telegraph that he had come out as gay in 2013[3], Wilson later pointedly clarified to The Yorkshire Post that he had not done so.[4] Further comments were given by Wilson to The Guardian where he stated that he "was officially “outed” by Time Out a couple of years ago. They included me in a list of influential gays. I didn’t mind – because I am gay – but I did think I’d better warn my sister, who had probably guessed anyway."[5]
