The First Doctor was the first incarnation of the Time Lord who became known as the Doctor. He held himself of high regard, and was prone to criticise those who he felt were naive or primitive compared to his intellect. However, he possessed compassion, warmth, and wit that made up for his egocentric nature, serving to act as a mentor and guardian figure in his elderly years.

Beginning after he fled his homeworld of Gallifrey, his travels through time space were mostly random owing to faulty components in his TARDIS. Initially, he travelled with his granddaughter Susan Foreman, but, after spending five months on 1963 Earth, where Susan was a student at Coal Hill School, he was forced to abruptly depart from Earth with Susan's teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, kidnapping them from their own time. After much travel with Ian and Barbara, he bade Susan farewell to allow her to live with a man with whom she had fallen in love. Free from any familial responsibilities, and altogether more comfortable with humans after Barbara's influence, he then went through a series of new companions until accidentally happening on Ben Jackson and Polly Wright in 1960s London. They, and in particular Polly, would help him through the final adventure of his life: his first regeneration...

Look! Individuals!
Humans.jpg

We track thousands of characters on this wiki, from the major to those that are only implied to exist through dialogue. To find them, it's awfully useful to understand something about our categories: we don't call 'em characters, but individuals. To start delving into our database about characters, just type category:individuals into the search bar. (Or you could just click that link — but that's kinda cheatin'!)

You're a Silurian, aren't you, Madame Vastra?

Individuals by species organises characters by species. So if you're looking for a particular Sontaran or a specific Aridian, this is where to come. (Watch out for those individual Farrashians, though: they're just mean!)

I know where you came from

Individuals by location gives you a sense of characters based on where they encountered the Doctor or other major characters. For instance, say you wanted to know other people who lived on the Powell Estate with Rose Tyler. All you have to do is go to Powell Estate residents to hit your search for six!

Mind your spelling
Andric.jpg
This is Andric, not Adric.

Let's face it: the DWU is full of crazy names. We try to give you a little note at the top of the page if you're within a letter of another character, but sometimes we haven't discovered the similarity yet. If you're at all in doubt about spelling, it's probably a good idea to actually go to the page and check it out!

Need an assistant?

Looking for companions? Aren't we all, sister! You could go broad and just look at companions of the Doctor. Or, you could narrow things down by looking for the companion of a specific Doctor — like category:Second Doctor companions.

Pleading the Fifth
FiveHoldsOnPOF.jpg

Here's a li'l tip: all Doctors' categories work the same way: number + Doctor + whatever. So, Fifth Doctor companions, Fifth Doctor comic stories and so on. Try this: enter just the phrase Category:Fifth in the search box on top of this page and see what pops up!

We don't even need a name to have a page about you

When we say we track obscure characters, we mean it! Look at how much stuff we have at individuals with unknown names!

Good boy, K9!
NewK9Mk2.jpg

Yes, robots are technology. But they're characters, too! So if you're looking for, in the words of Douglas Adams, "your plastic pal who's fun to be with", go to individual robots!
