Is this really a production error?

When The Doctor meets Courtney Woods in the Caretaker's shed, he hands the package of paper towels to her, but they reappear in his hand, and she walks off empty-handed.

It seems like it was intentional that Courtney forgot to take the paper towels because she got distracted talking to the Doctor because he looks at them in his hand when Clara asks why Courtney was there. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.235.140.59 (talk).

2018

While I have no doubt that this story does take place a year after Into the Dalek, I am curious as to where the 2018 date comes from? After all with a lot of recent stories having their modern day pieces set at the time of air (specifically a lot of 11th Doctor stories, including I believe the 50th Anniversary) I am wondering why we are believed to now be so many years in the future? During RTD's era (starting with Alien's of London) the episodes were Year + 1. Although there's no reason to assume it applies to the Moffat era, some do. [Now=2015].

There were references to extended periods of "real time" covered, especially in Series 7A, with "Power of Three" specifically called a year. [Now=2016 or 2017].

Danny just started at Coal Hill in "Into the Dalek" but had been there more than a year by "The Caretaker" [Now=2017 or 2018].

I see no reason for assuming that Clara didn't start in real time (especially, as you say it seems to be the case in-story), and the simplest answer is [Now=2015] for "The Caretaker." But that's me, others like the more complex answer. 101.179.11.178^{talk to me}

I was wrong. It goes back to Straxx saying that Clara is 27 in "Deep Breath" and so it has been decided by someone that Series 7B went for 3 years and "The Time of the Doctor" was Christmas 2016.

That ignores the fact that in one year of real time she could have travelled extra years with the Doctor (like the Ponds were said to be looking older than their same-aged friends) and so I think is a mistake that needs to be fixed. 101.179.11.178^{talk to me} 01:50, October 6, 2014 (UTC)

The one year passing between Into the Dalek and The Caretaker was based on Courtney's parents' saying the word "you" to Danny when discussing the difference between Courtney's very disruptive influence from last year and her current disruptive influence. I saw debate on other sites about whether they meant Danny specifically or a general "you" as in "the school said." Someone finally asked Gareth Roberts on Twitter and he said her parents were referring to "another teacher" from the previous school year. The line is debatable even without knowing the writer's intent, so I don't think we should be stating there is an in-universe year between the two episodes. Mewiet ☎ 02:28, October 6, 2014 (UTC)

Any date that's arrived at by speculation is not allowed. This is why we got rid of timelines on story pages a couple of years ago. It's far better to state a time period that covers the possibilities rather than give a specific year that isn't correct. Unfortunately, there are quite a few pages from series 8 that have had specific dates added to them, and it's going to take a bit of work to figure out which ones are correct and which ones aren't.
