A matrix data slice was a Gallifreyan hard drive, a portion of the Matrix supercomputer.

Missy used a matrix data slice to house the Nethersphere, a virtual reality, into which she uploaded the minds of recently deceased humans for later downloading into Cyberman bodies. (TV: Dark Water)
