A containment vortex was a device which confined a prisoner in a force field. It also drained energy from weapons that used energy for power. Mr Smith possessed a containment vortex which he used on Mrs Wormwood (TV: Enemy of the Bane) and Androvax. (TV: The Vault of Secrets) He attempted to use it on the Qetesh, "Ruby White", but she drained the vortex's energy instead. (TV: Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith)
