Summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe have landed at Hope City. Jamie, scouting ahead, notices that no one is around and the city is in ruins before deciding to reunite with the Doctor and Zoe. Noticing Jamie, the Robot King emerges from the rubble, noting that humans have been extinct for 1,000 years. Jamie returns to the Doctor and Zoe, with Zoe asks him if he found anything interesting. The Doctor is shocked that Hope City is in ruins, and Jamie explains further that it seems that it had been destroyed in an atomic explosion. The time travelers go and explore the city, where they are noticed by the robot. The Doctor decides to split up the group, leaving Jamie and Zoe alone. Zoe hears something, and Jamie goes to investigate.
Zoe waits for a long time before noticing mechanical footprints, which belong to the robot that is right in front of her. The robot lumbers closer to Zoe, and she cries for help. Jamie, meanwhile, decides that they must have been mistaken about arriving at Hope City, and begins to go back to Zoe. He then sees the robot, and also cries for help, a cry that is noticed by the Doctor, who believes that it is coming from the back of a building, where he sees the robot. The robot says that it was expecting him, as it saw him in the minds of his companions, to which the Doctor asks where they are. The robot says they're safe right now, but it must destroy him. The Doctor points out that machines were made to serve man, to which the robot says, "I am the Robot King, I command! Come!"
The Robot King shows the Doctor his missing companions, who feel like they've been brainwashed. The Robot King says it knows there aren't more of them due to its telepathic powers. The Robot King says it is the only survivor of a war that destroyed mankind, a war that has caused it to think that humans are not responsible enough to live. The Robot King picks the Doctor up, where he finds a switch. After it is flicked, the Robot King collapses, with the Doctor explaining that he had found the off switch.
