Paula was a crew member on board the Pollyanna. When the Umbra began heading towards the Pollyanna on an intercept course, she read a readout, confirming to Captain Dhawan that the Umbra had biological life signs, and numbered "at least five thousand". When she started to look at the Umbra, the began to open the Pollyanna's plasma intakes. Clara Oswald, realising what was happening, ordered the flight deck screen to be switched off.
