Dawson was a soldier in the British Army. He took part in the fight against the Great Intelligence and its Mark II Yeti in the London Underground.
While attempting to get to the Second Doctor's TARDIS, Dawson, along with most of the other soldiers, were killed by the Yeti. (TV: The Web of Fear)
