File names have a direct effect upon SEO and therefore how many people can find the wiki through ordinary Google searches. File names should be plain and accurately descriptive.

Simple, English-language file names improve our wiki's ranking in search engines, and drive more traffic to our site. It is better to use something clear like Dalek Annual 1976.jpg, rather than the awfully useless 34092 1463348074399 1554413376 1132859 4557396 n.jpg

This is not something that was known when this wiki first started, so unfortunately you will find many examples of the latter type of file naming. However, please make an effort to create any new files with common-sense, English words that accurately describe the main subjects of the picture.

Profanity typically shouldn't be in file names

Please note that while swear words are "common-sense, English words", they should be avoided in titles. Quite apart from any puritanical rationale, certain, sexually-charged profanities will simply mislead people performing Google searches. We don't want to attract people to the site because we've used inappropriate anatomical slang in a picture's title! [1]

Correct spelling errors quickly

Please don't let spelling errors persist in file names. For example, if you upload an image to the name Teh Dcotor's TARDIS in 42.jpg please immediately add {{spelt|The Doctor's TARDIS in 42}} to the file page, and an admin will correct the issue.

Consequences for policy violations

Pictures in violation of this guideline may be deleted, or renamed, without warning. Users who repeatedly violate by uploading files with gibberish names may be blocked.

Footnotes

  1. Of course, as corresponds to our T:NOT SFW policy, there may be individual cases where profanity could be in a file name, based upon the subject matter. Admin will decide on a case-by-case basis if a file name violates this policy.
