Thorington was a town in Uzbekistan, which was originally on an island in the Aral Sea before the drying up of the sea by left it connected to mainland Asia.
Prior to 1991, it was used by the Soviet Union as a spy training centre for Autons they'd created using a Nestene energy unit they'd found. These Autons were intended to be used by the Soviet Union to undertake missions in the United Kingdom.
When Uzbekistan gained its independence on 1 September 1991, the Autons stopped receiving orders from the Soviets. This meant they lived out the same day, thinking they were humans, for seventeen years.
On 24 October 2008, the town was visited by the Eighth Doctor and Lucie Miller. (AUDIO: Brave New Town)
