Lewis was a uniformed officer of the Metropolitan Police Service in 1888. On 30 September, he accompanied Amy Pond from the scene of Elizabeth Stride's murder to the one of Catherine Eddowes. He broke away because they were crossing jurisdictional lines, which left Amy to face Mac'atyde alone. He came back for her with the permission of the local City Policeman. The City Police and Lewis saw Eddowes dead and the Eleventh Doctor leaning over a paralysed Amy. They all leapt to the conclusion that the Doctor was trying to kill her with his sonic screwdriver.
