It was officially billed a sequel to ''[[Dimensions in Time (TV story)|Dimensions in Time]]'' and a prequel to ''[[Search Out Space (TV story)|Search Out Space]]'', seeking to bring these two stories' events into conventional ''Doctor Who'' continuity.

The story noticeably retconed that the K9 featured in the final moments of ''Dimensions in Time'' was actually a specific model built by the Seventh Doctor instead of one of the earlier versions pulled through time by the Rani. As the final scene of the story only shows the Doctor and Ace from the waists up, one could easily imagine that K9 is below them entering the TARDIS around the same time. Likewise, the suggestion of the text is that the K9 seen in ''Search Out Space'' was also this variation.
