Alastair King was a conductor and orchestrator of Murray Gold's Doctor Who music for half of series 9, then took up the role exclusively for series 10. He replaced Ben Foster, who was conductor and orchestrator from 2005 to 2015.

With Murray Gold's departure, however, Alec Roberts took over for series 11. He returned as conductor in series 13's The Vanquishers, and remained in the role for the 2022 specials.

He acted as conductor for the 2024 Doctor Who at the Proms, also briefly playing himself in a skit which closed out the first half of the performance and led into the intermission.
