Bertram was a passenger on the colony ship Karsudan when he was eight years old. He and his sister Alpharetta were woken early at the same time that the Fourth Doctor, Romana II and K9 Mark II arrived on the ship in response to a distress call.

After the Doctor, Romana and K9 fixed the ship, Romana put the children back to bed. Then the Doctor and his friends left gifts for all the passengers to find when they woke up on 25 December. (PROSE: All Snug in Their Beds)
