Tim Barter was a member of the visual effects department of the BBC Wales version of Doctor Who from Smith and Jones to The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. He has served in many capacities from digital compositor to on-set visual effects supervisor to digital matte painter. His most frequently credited job has been as on-set visual effects supervisor for the 2008, 2009 & 2011 seasons.
He shared a prestigious Visual Effects Society award with Simon Wicker, Charlie Bennett and Arianna Lago for their matte paintings on Silence in the Library. Their win was the first for the Doctor Who visual effects team, after several failed nominations. Despite his VES win, however, Barter was not himself credited on at least the initial broadcast of Library.[1]
He also contributed composites to the first episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures and a few episodes of the first two series of Torchwood. He was a semi-regular feature of the fourth series of Doctor Who Confidential, appearing in the episodes attached to Partners in Crime, Planet of the Ood and The Unicorn and the Wasp. He has further appeared in 2010's Christmas Special 2010 and 2011's Take Two & The Born Identity.
Barter's career began at the dawn of the 21st century. Outside the Doctor Who franchise, he has lent his talents to Merlin, Bonekickers, Sunshine, X-Men: The Last Stand, Skellig (on which fellow VSE winner, Charlie Bennett, also worked), and various other projects.
