The British East India Company ran India after the fall of the Mughal dynasty in 1756. They coordinated the lucrative jute, indigo and spice trade. After a native revolt in 1857, sparked by the belief that the soldiers were coating their cartridges in beef or pork fat, the company was abolished and the Indian Civil Service founded.
