The Novosibirsk Project was a 1960s conspiracy theory that John Brent's father bought into. Believers thought that the extreme cold during the winter of 1963 was being caused by the Russians. Reportedly, they pointed a freezing ray at England from the mirrored spherical satellite Sputnik in order to make England's soil barren. John Brent claimed that even the Kremlin admitted to the project's existence.
The low temperature, however, was really to be attributed to the entity called the Cold. (PROSE: Time and Relative)
