The Player was a renegade Time Lord who tried to hide from the Last Great Time War.

He encountered the First Doctor after his timeline had been altered by the Daleks so that he would not regenerate in the South Pole. The Player helped the Doctor get back on the right path, telling the Doctor that he would 'die' at the South Pole but regenerate afterwards, but told the Doctor that it would take time for him to become the incarnation that would take part in the War. The Player knew then that he would have to fight on the front lines of the War. (AUDIO: The Plague of Dreams)

The Seventh Doctor mentioned the Player, as well as the Master and the Rani, as renegade Time Lords who at least had reasons for their actions, unlike the Eleven. (AUDIO: Dark Universe)
