Androgums were a barbaric, primitive humanoid race used for menial labour in the Third Zone.
Biology[[edit]]
Androgums were human-like in basic appearance, but with large, orange eyebrows and grey warts around their face. Androgums had heavy builds, and could easily overpower a human. They also had enormous appetites, able to consume massive amounts of food with little discomfort. (TV: The Two Doctors) They were also significantly tougher than a human; Chris Cwej once punched an Androgum on the chin, only to break his fist. (PROSE: Shakedown)
Culture[[edit]]
The main trait of the Androgums was their love of food and eating, as they possessed nearly insatiable appetites. Androgum law was that the gratification of pleasure was the sole motive of action. Androgums would eat nearly anything, including vermin and intelligent species (even, it was implied, other Androgums).
Androgums were split into clans called Grigs, such as the Quawncing and Franzine Grigs. These Grigs were of great importance to the Androgums, who felt strong loyalty to their bloodlines. (TV: The Two Doctors)
Androgums had a recipe for a beverage called Sugary Shiplanos. The drink was a favourite among them. (PROSE: Snowglobe 7)
The Androgums had a cooking instrument called the boomerang spoon. (PROSE: Storm Harvest)
History[[edit]]
On the Space Station Camera, Androgums were often employed as workers or subjects for experiments. Many Androgums were used in the temporal experiments of Kartz and Reimer. Another Androgum, Chessene, had her intelligence artificially augmented by Dastari. Most of the Androgums on Camera were killed in the Sontaran attack. (TV: The Two Doctors)
At some point before 2050, an Androgum space hopper crashed in the Bristol Channel. Humans found the recipe for Sugary Shiplanos therein. The Tenth Doctor mentioned this to Martha Jones. (PROSE: Snowglobe 7)
Edwin Bryce wrote a book called Androgum Cookery for Novices: How to Master the Boomerang Spoon. (PROSE: Storm Harvest)
Androgums ate one of Kandyman's older bodies. (AUDIO: Sweet Salvation)
Behind the scenes[[edit]]
- The name "Androgum" is an anagram of "Gourmand", a person who takes great pleasure in food.
- Makeup artists created the Androgum's distinctive warts by glueing Rice Krispies to the actors' faces.
