Thrace was a region in Europe, at the Bosphorus strait and Black Sea. The city of Byzantium (later known as Istanbul) was located in Thrace, which was a province of the Roman Empire in the 1st century, albeit in the form of various free city-states with protectorate status, at least until 73 AD. The Via Egnatia was a chariot road built by the Romans which linked Thrace with Italy.
According to one account, the Doctor's TARDIS materialised in Thrace in 64 shortly after leaving Dido, (PROSE: Byzantium!) although another account supposed that it instead materialised near to Rome. (PROSE: Romans Cutaway)
Both Caesar and his wife Augusta took a sexual interest in "strapping great Thracians", especially those who served as gladiators. (AUDIO: Gladiator [+]Loading...["Gladiator (audio story)"])
