Roger was a scientist. He belonged to a fairly advanced human civilisation, quite similar to the later human society of the 20th century onwards, which flourished thousands of years before and was all but forgotten after most of them left the planet to colonise another, and the humans who remained on Earth returned to a "primitive" lifestyle.
Roger lived about nine hundred years before the latter events. He was a coworker of Adam, a scientist who had invented an "immortality serum". Adam was only ever able to create one dose of the serum, which he consumed himself. Over the following few years, it pained Adam to see his friends getting older while he remained the same age, and he eventually announced to Roger that he was leaving the lab. Adam occasionally visited in the ensuing decades, but the sight of Roger falling pray to debilitating old age was so difficult for Adam that he decided to leave his home city for good, and never stay in one place long enough to form new attachments.
