The Sea of Marmara was a body of water which the city of Byzantium (later known as Constantinople and Istanbul) had a coast. The city was usually approached by passing from the Aegean Sea to the Hellespont before arriving in the Sea of Mamara, from which the city could be observed on its peninsula, as well as the nearby Golden Horn estuary.
