The captain ordered a search for the Third Doctor and Jo Grant because of their unauthorised presence on his ship.
He was fluent in Hindi, as he gave orders in this language to the Indian seamen on board the Bernice.
When the pair were caught by Lieutenant John Andrews and imprisoned as stowaways, being confined to Major Daly's cabin, he told them the captain was "a very busy man" and would see them when he had time.
When the Doctor and Jo found they were inside a miniscope and needed a rope to negotiate a deep shaft, they returned to the Bernice to borrow one from the hold. There, Jo was caught by Andrews, who had forgotten they had previously met. Later, when Andrews told Jo the captain wanted to see her, she mentioned that last time the captain had been too busy — a statement which naturally puzzled Andrews. (TV: Carnival of Monsters)
