The Hydra was a monstrous serpent which existed on Earth in ancient times.

The Hydra had nine heads, including a middle one that was immortal. Additionally, whenever one of its heads was cut off, two new ones grew in its place. Hercules was tasked with killing the beast; (PROSE: Mythical Monsters) despite Hera trying to distract him using a giant crab, (PROSE: Introduction and links) he succeeded thanks to the help of a servant who cauterised each wound as he inflicted it on the creature, preventing new heads from growing back. Reaching the final, immortal head, Hercules severed it from the body and buried it alive underneath a boulder. (PROSE: Mythical Monsters)
