Geoffrey Hughes (2 February 1944-27 July 2012[1]) played Mr Popplewick in the Doctor Who television story The Ultimate Foe.

As Mr Popplewick was an alias of the Valeyard and the Valeyard was, according to the Tremas Master, "an amalgamation of the darker side of the Doctor's nature", taken from somewhere between his "twelfth and final incarnations", Geoffrey Hughes is technically a credited actor employed by the BBC to play the Doctor.

Career[[edit] | [edit source]]

He is also well-known as Onslow, Hyacinth Bucket's slovenly brother-in-law on the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances and previously for playing the equally slovenly Eddie Yates in Coronation Street. He provided the voice of Paul McCartney in the Beatles' film Yellow Submarine, and also played businessman Vernon Scripps in Heartbeat, and served as Deputy Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight.

Death[[edit] | [edit source]]

In 2009 and again in August 2010, he was taken to hospital with prostate cancer. He died on 27 July 2012.
