Russell was abducted by the War Lords, who failed to hypnotise him into participating in their simulated version of the war. He fought against them as a member of the resistance and helped the Second Doctor defeat them.

Like all the surviving victims of the War Lords, Russell was returned to his proper time and place on Earth by the Time Lords. (TV: The War Games)
