The Fourth Doctor's physical appearance was "all teeth and curls", this incarnation of the Doctor being an imposing figure with a wide grin, and brown, curly hair. He was well-known for his long, multi-coloured scarf, which would frequently trail on the floor as he travelled around, and had a variety of different outfits during his lifetime, albeit with common elements to them. He would often wear an old, battered hat.
General appearance[[edit] | [edit source]]
Standing at 6'4", (PROSE: The Romance of Crime [+]Loading...["The Romance of Crime (novel)"]) the Fourth Doctor was notable for having large, expressive blue eyes, a large hooked nose, a round chin, bright white teeth and a large head of wild curly brown hair, (TV: Planet of the Spiders [+]Loading...["Planet of the Spiders (TV story)"], Robot [+]Loading...["Robot (TV story)"]) leading him to frequently be described as being "all teeth and curls". (TV: The Five Doctors [+]Loading...["The Five Doctors (TV story)"]; WC: Shada [+]Loading...["Shada (webcast)"], Doctors Assemble! [+]Loading...["Doctors Assemble! (webcast)"]; PROSE: The Touch of the Nurazh [+]Loading...["The Touch of the Nurazh (short story)"]; COMIC: The Lost Dimension [+]Loading...["The Lost Dimension (comic story)"]) He had short, light brown hairs growing on his arms. (TV: Robot [+]Loading...["Robot (TV story)"])
By the time he was given his quest for the Key to Time by the White Guardian, the Doctor's hair had started to turn grey, and he had acquired a small scar on his upper lip, (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"]) which was made worse after he banged his face on the TARDIS control console, (TV: The Pirate Planet [+]Loading...["The Pirate Planet (TV story)"]) though it soon faded. (TV: The Stones of Blood [+]Loading...["The Stones of Blood (TV story)"])
Upon first seeing his reflection, the Doctor lamented that "nothing [was] perfect", and that he had to "take the rough with the smooth", but thought his "nose [was] a definite improvement", though remained unsure about his ears in comparison. (TV: Robot [+]Loading...["Robot (TV story)"]) He eventually came to think of himself as being attractive. (AUDIO: The Power of the Daleks [+]Loading...["The Power of the Daleks (audio story)"])
Li H'sen Chang described the Fourth Doctor as "tall with wide pale eyes and hair that curls like the ram", (TV: The Talons of Weng-Chiang [+]Loading...["The Talons of Weng-Chiang (TV story)"]) with Mena describing him as a "tall curly-headed humanoid". (TV: The Leisure Hive [+]Loading...["The Leisure Hive (TV story)"]) Adric also called the Doctor a "tall man with curly hair and a silly scarf." (TV: State of Decay [+]Loading...["State of Decay (TV story)"]) Professor Frederick Marius remarked that the Doctor looked like a "space vagrant", (TV: The Invisible Enemy [+]Loading...["The Invisible Enemy (TV story)"]) while Paul Magrs thought that the Fourth Doctor resembled Tom Baker. (PROSE: Bafflement and Devotion [+]Loading...["Bafflement and Devotion (short story)"])
The First Doctor described his fourth incarnation as the "taller chap with the teeth and the scarf", (PROSE: Five Card Draw [+]Loading...["Five Card Draw (short story)"]) while the Sixth Doctor called him the "tall one with the teeth and the dark mass of curly hair". (PROSE: The Shadow in the Glass [+]Loading...["The Shadow in the Glass (novel)"])
When Affinity took on the Fourth Doctor's appearance, the Twelfth Doctor noted that his fourth incarnation's "eyes bulged alarmingly above tombstone teeth". He also doubted that the "battered hat jammed down over a madness of brown curls and an improbably long scarf displayed any sort of style." (PROSE: Silhouette [+]Loading...["Silhouette (novel)"])
Clothing[[edit] | [edit source]]
Main attires[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Fourth Doctor's most distinctive item of clothing was a series of long, rainbow-styled scarfs that varied in length and pattern formation, (TV: Robot [+]Loading...["Robot (TV story)"], Image of the Fendahl [+]Loading...["Image of the Fendahl (TV story)"], The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"], Shada [+]Loading...["Shada (TV story)"]) which had originally been knitted for him by Madame Nostradamus, (TV: The Ark in Space [+]Loading...["The Ark in Space (TV story)"]) though he also owned a yellow and green striped scarf. (COMIC: The Totally Stonking, Surprisingly Educational And Utterly Mindboggling Comic Relief Comic [+]Loading...["The Totally Stonking, Surprisingly Educational And Utterly Mindboggling Comic Relief Comic (comic story)"]) His dark curly hair was often partially hidden by a floppy chocolate brown fedora. (TV: Robot [+]Loading...["Robot (TV story)"])
Aside from his scarf, the Doctor's first outfit consisted of a safari jacket of rust-orange corduroy with elbow patches, an Argyle cardigan in many shades of brown, a white dress shirt, an emerald green skinny tie, ankle-high leather shoes, ash grey tweed trousers (TV: Robot [+]Loading...["Robot (TV story)"]) held up by braces, (COMIC: The Sinister Sea [+]Loading...["The Sinister Sea (comic story)"]) and a tank top. (TV: Pyramids of Mars [+]Loading...["Pyramids of Mars (TV story)"]) After wearing a maroon cravat, (TV: The Android Invasion-The Robots of Death) he eventually abandoned neck wear in favour of an open-necked shirt, (TV: Image of the Fendahl [+]Loading...["Image of the Fendahl (TV story)"]) with a likewise unbuttoned waistcoat, as well as an ivory cravat tied around his neck. (TV: The Invasion of Time [+]Loading...["The Invasion of Time (TV story)"])

(TV: The Power of Kroll [+]Loading...["The Power of Kroll (TV story)"]) He sometimes adorned his coats with lapel pins and brooches in various shapes, such as a flock of geese, (TV: The Power of Kroll [+]Loading...["The Power of Kroll (TV story)"]) or an artist's pallet with tubes of paint. (TV: City of Death [+]Loading...["City of Death (TV story)"]) He also varied his footwear to include leather boots, (TV: The Deadly Assassin [+]Loading...["The Deadly Assassin (TV story)"]) ugg-style boots, (TV: The Face of Evil [+]Loading...["The Face of Evil (TV story)"]) and green knee-high wellington boots, (TV: The Power of Kroll [+]Loading...["The Power of Kroll (TV story)"]) and also changed his usual style to a green sleeveless-cardigan, (COMIC: Jackals of Space [+]Loading...["Jackals of Space (comic story)"]) a wine purple waistcoat, (TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"]) brown checkered trousers, (TV: The Power of Kroll [+]Loading...["The Power of Kroll (TV story)"]) and a yellow, checkered waistcoat. (TV: City of Death [+]Loading...["City of Death (TV story)"]) He would also switch his braces for a black belt. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Destiny of the Daleks (TV story)"])
The Doctor occasionally wore trench coats, such as a chestnut brown one with dark brown trim, (TV: The Ark in Space [+]Loading...["The Ark in Space (TV story)"]) and a plum purple velvet one.
